Better known as Bob, he rose quickly to prominence as an artist in his native New England. Having pursued a lifelong study of the styles and techniques of the masters of ancient and modern art history, he has also acquired a vast wealth of knowledge and skills by studying with renowned masters of the contemporary art world. Foremost among them was Tom Blackwell, one of the original Photo-Realists. Bob’s oil paintings incorporate an adaptation of the methods developed by the artist/illustrator Maxfield Parrish. However, he has developed a wide range of techniques to depict the people, places, and things that he draws and paints.
To be a successful artist, it is essential for the artist to have a firm foundational knowledge of the timeless principles of art. Having a broad familiarity with the various materials, tools, and techniques available to accommodate your expressive needs is fundamental to achieving artistic success. As a participant in the workshops I offer, you will acquire this knowledge and these skills. And when put into practice, they will help to elevate the quality of your artwork to levels of professionalism you have always yearned for.
Bob’s present work incorporates many of the methods and techniques utilized by the ancient and modern realists. He uses oil paints, watercolors, charcoal, and graphite to depict the people, places, and things in his drawings and paintings. His original artwork is highly desirable and widely collected. These works hang in public and private art collections throughout the world.
In addition to his original artwork, many of the images displayed here in the Gallery are available as artist signed and numbered Limited Edition Giclee Prints. Editions are limited to only 50 prints and 5 Artist Proofs.

MY UNIQUE PAINTING PROCESS
As you will readily see, my style is traditional realism. However, my method of painting is anything but traditional. I have adapted the process of painting developed by Maxfield Parrish to fit my personal needs. Beginning with a dynamic composition and a detailed drawing as a foundation, I build upon it with a glazed under-painting to establish broad value patterns and to enhance the design. The body of the painting is then established by adding successive layers of transparent glazes to build and define its structure. Glazes are single transparent layers of pure pigment, and I separate each of them with an intermediate clear layer. As light shines through the paint to the white ground of the canvas and then, by varying degrees, reflects back out to the viewer’s eye, these overlapping glazes act as filters for light. The result is that the colors the viewer sees when looking at the finished painting have literally been mixed within the surface of the painting itself. Seldom do I mix my pigments on the palette. In reality, I am painting with light. In this way I endeavor to depict the light actually falling onto the subject I am painting as well as the light radiating from within the painted image.
